What is Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of making your business the source AI assistants cite when buyers ask. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews for the best option in Singapore, the assistant names two or three businesses. GEO is the work that makes you one of them.

Why GEO exists now

Search is splitting in two. For twenty years, the goal was to rank in a list of ten blue links. Today a growing share of buyers never see that list — they ask an AI assistant and act on the single answer it gives, complete with a handful of cited sources. If your business isn’t in that answer, there’s no impression, no click, and no chance to compete. Being “page one” no longer guarantees you’re in the conversation.

This matters more in Singapore than almost anywhere: English-language AI search adoption is high, the SME base is dense, and the category is new enough that few local businesses have done the groundwork. Early movers get entrenched, because AI tends to cite what is already cited.

GEO vs SEO vs AEO — the words, decoded

The terminology is noisy, so here is the plain version:

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) — getting your page to rank in Google’s blue links.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) — getting your brand cited inside AI-generated answers.
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and LLMO (LLM Optimisation) — near-synonyms for GEO, emphasising “be the answer”.

They aren’t rivals. SEO still feeds Google’s AI Overviews, and strong content helps everywhere. For the full breakdown, see GEO vs SEO.

How GEO actually works

AI assistants don’t just read your website — most don’t even run its JavaScript. They assemble answers from what trusted third parties say about you: directories, forums, listicles, reviews and news. So GEO works on the whole network of signals, not just your site. We define the buyer questions you want to win, then move seven levers:

  1. Technical readiness — server-side rendered, machine-readable pages AI can actually read.
  2. Source-of-truth consistency — the same facts about you, everywhere.
  3. Third-party citation network — the trusted sources AI draws from (the real prize).
  4. Reviews & reputation — genuine signals on the surfaces engines weigh.
  5. Authority placements — earned press, listicles and mentions.
  6. Structured data — schema as hygiene, where it earns rich results.
  7. Monitoring & correction — tracking and fixing what AI says about you.

A practical, step-by-step version is in our guide to getting cited in ChatGPT and other AI engines. And to be clear about what GEO is not: you do not need a magic “AI schema” or an llms.txt file — see the honest take on AI-visibility snake oil.

How GEO is measured: the AI Visibility Score

GEO’s metric isn’t ranking — it’s citation share. We track an AI Visibility Score: how often, and how favourably, assistants cite you for your target questions, across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot. It’s baselined at the start and reported every month, so you can see what moved and why.

GEO in Singapore: often grant-subsidised

Because this is AI-productivity work, eligible Singapore SMEs can subsidise a GEO engagement through government grants such as PSG — see how the PSG grant works for AI marketing. We confirm eligibility first, and never take payment before your application is in.

Frequently asked questions

What is generative engine optimisation (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of making a business the source that AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Copilot — cite when they answer buyer questions. Where SEO aims to rank a page, GEO aims to be named inside the AI’s answer.

Is GEO the same as AEO or LLMO?

They overlap. Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and LLM Optimisation (LLMO) are near-synonyms that emphasise being the answer an AI or answer engine returns. GEO is the term most used for optimising specifically for generative AI assistants. In practice they describe the same goal: being the cited, recommended source.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No — it extends it. Classic SEO still drives Google rankings and feeds Google’s AI Overviews. GEO adds the work that wins citations across AI assistants: entity clarity, consistent facts, and a trusted third-party network. You want both.

How is GEO measured?

By citation share, not rankings. Coalessa tracks an AI Visibility Score — how often, and how favourably, AI assistants cite you for your target buyer questions, per engine — baselined and reported monthly.
