GEO vs SEO: what’s the difference, and do you need both?

SEO gets your page ranked in Google’s links. GEO gets your brand cited inside AI answers. SEO’s metric is ranking; GEO’s metric is citation share. They’re complementary, not competing — and in 2026, most Singapore businesses need both.

What SEO does

SEO optimises your website to rank in search results: keyword-aligned content, a crawlable site, internal links and backlinks that build authority. It still matters enormously — including for AI — because Google’s AI Overviews are built on top of Google’s classic ranking. A page that ranks well is a page AI Overviews is more likely to pull from.

What GEO does

GEO optimises to be the cited source inside an AI-generated answer. That requires a different toolkit: a clear, consistent business entity AI can recognise; the same facts about you everywhere; a network of trusted third-party mentions (directories, forums, listicles, reviews); and server-side rendering so AI crawlers — which generally don’t execute JavaScript — can actually read your content and structured data. New to the idea? Start with what generative engine optimisation is.

AEO vs GEO vs SEO

You’ll also see AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and LLMO (LLM Optimisation). For practical purposes they’re the same goal as GEO: be the answer, not just a link. AEO vs SEO is the same contrast as GEO vs SEO — don’t let the acronyms distract from the one idea that matters: optimise to be cited and recommended, not merely ranked.

How each is measured

SEO is measured by rankings, organic traffic and conversions. GEO is measured by citation share — how often and how favourably AI assistants name you for the questions your buyers ask. We track this as an AI Visibility Score across five engines, baselined and reported monthly, so the number is something you can actually manage.

The honest caveat

Be wary of anyone selling GEO as a magic markup trick. Google has said you do not need special “AI schema” or an llms.txt file — schema is hygiene, not a secret lever. Real AI visibility is earned across every engine. We wrote the honest version here: do you need llms.txt or AI schema?

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) optimises to rank your page in a list of links. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) optimises to be the source an AI assistant cites in its answer. SEO’s metric is ranking; GEO’s metric is citation share.

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

No. They share foundations — clean, crawlable, authoritative content helps both — but GEO adds work SEO never required: building a consistent entity, earning third-party citations across the sources AI trusts, and server-side rendering so AI crawlers (which don’t run JavaScript) can read you.

What is AEO, and how does it relate to GEO vs SEO?

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is effectively GEO viewed from the “answer” angle. AEO vs SEO is the same contrast as GEO vs SEO: optimising to be the answer rather than a ranked link.

Do I need both GEO and SEO?

Usually yes. Classic SEO still drives Google rankings and feeds Google’s AI Overviews, while GEO wins citations across the other AI assistants. Dropping SEO would weaken your GEO; treating GEO as optional means conceding the fastest-growing discovery channel.
